Malawi President, Arthur Peter Mutharika, has reiterated his firm stance that individuals involved in the controversial sale of the Amaryllis Hotel will not escape accountability as investigations into the matter continue.
The President’s position was communicated through his Presidential Press Secretary, Cathy Maulidi, who said the Head of State is closely monitoring developments surrounding the issue and remains committed to ensuring that all those implicated are brought to justice as part of the government’s broader fight against corruption.
Maulidi was responding to a recent press conference held by the disgruntled Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), where the civil society grouping raised concerns over the handling of the controversial transaction and called for transparency and accountability.
According to Maulidi, President Mutharika believes the matter must be thoroughly investigated and that no one involved should be allowed to go scot-free if found culpable.
“The President is closely following developments regarding the Amaryllis Hotel sale. He remains firm in his commitment that anyone implicated in the issue must be held accountable,”said Maulidi .
She further noted that the President has full confidence in the work of Parliament’s oversight institutions, particularly the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is currently examining the circumstances surrounding the sale.
Maulidi added that the President is awaiting the committee’s findings and believes the process being undertaken by the parliamentary body will help establish the facts and guide the next course of action.
The development comes just hours after former Presidential Secretary Colleen Zamba failed to appear before the PAC of Parliament, where she had been summoned to answer questions related to the sale of the hotel.
Her absence has raised further questions about the transaction and intensified calls from civil society organisations and some lawmakers for greater transparency in the handling of the matter.
The PAC has been conducting inquiries into the sale of the hotel amid allegations that the process may have been irregular and potentially detrimental to the public interest.
Meanwhile, the scattered Human Rights Defenders Coalition has continued to mount pressure on authorities, insisting that the issue must be handled transparently and that those responsible should face appropriate legal consequences if wrongdoing is established.
The outcome of the PAC investigation is expected to play a critical role in determining whether further legal or administrative action will be taken against individuals linked to the deal.
