Macra confirms Mayamiko Nkoloma as director general

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) board of directors have confirmed information technology specialist Mayamiko Nkoloma as director general of the parastatal.

Macra board chairperson Chancy Gondwe on Saturday said in a statement they expect Nkoloma, who has been acting director general since mid–December 2025, to transform the institution into a modern, credible and people–centred regulator.

Nkoloma: I want to make Macra an agile regulator.

“The board has full confidence in his abilities to drive improvements in service quality, stronger stakeholder confidence in the authority, progress in rural connectivity and a more agile regulatory environment,” reads the statement announcing the appointment.

“We look forward to Macra’s transformation into a modern, credible and people-centred regulator, that enables Malawi’s digital future while protecting the public interest and nurturing innovation.”

In a brief response on Saturday, Nkoloma described his confirmation as a privilege to serve.

He said: “My focus is to make Macra an agile regulator that guarantees quality communication services, promotes ethical broadcasting and drives digitisation, innovation and inclusive access to ICT for all Malawians.”

Nkoloma replaces Daud Suleman who was suspended in October 2025 and fired in February this year.

Macra’s board, however, did not disclose reasons for Suleman’s dismissal.

In July 2025, immediate-past president Lazarus Chakwera appointed Nkoloma as a commissioner for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)following a recommendation by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). But days later, Chakwera rescinded the appointment on the basis that he was still a public officer, lecturing at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas).

Nkoloma’s profile shows that he has a Master of Science in Wireless Communication from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom as well as a Master of Technology in Advanced Information Technology with specialisation in telecommunications and networking from International Institute of Information and Technology in Pune, India.

He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Mubas.

Nkoloma also boasts of numerous local and international awards, among others, by the ICT Association of Malawi (Ictam) for being innovative by applying ICT in the field of technology. He also owns an ICT innovation firm Imosys Limited.
