The government has reassured Malawians that no one will die of hunger as relief food continues to arrive from various partners to support families affected by the current food crisis.
The assurance follows a K300 million food contribution from Airtel Malawi, through the Airtel Africa Foundation, to the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DoDMA), comprising 2,000 bags of maize and 500 bags of porridge flour.
Speaking during a handover ceremony held at Chikwembele Court in Blantyre on Tuesday, Chief Secretary to Government Justin Saidi said the response to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s declaration of a state of disaster covering all 26 districts and four cities has been encouraging.
“The support from both local and international partners is coming in large numbers, and we are extremely grateful. No one will die of hunger. The food we are receiving will reach many people who are in desperate need,” Saidi said.
While thanking Airtel Malawi for the support, Saidi further added that this will ease pressure on households in vulnerable communities, particularly as nearly four million people are projected to require food assistance, according to the 2025 Malawi Food Vulnerability Assessment.
Airtel Malawi Enterprise Director Limbani Ngoma said the company responded to a call to support communities whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the disaster.
“We want to be there with Malawians in times of need, just as they support us in times of happiness,” Ngoma said.
According to Ngoma, the aid will benefit about 2,000 families, with 1,000 households assisted in Blantyre and another 1,000 in Chikwawa, as distribution continues through DoDMA.
