Karonga District Commissioner Willard Mwambo has warned beneficiaries of relief maize in the district from selling the aid, saying the malpractice is against the law.

Mwambo issued the warning on Thursday during the distribution of 600 bags of maize to 600 households in the area of Senior Chief Kilupula.

“Let me remind the beneficiaries that selling the aid is unacceptable. It is already written on the bags that the maize should not be sold. Whoever is found doing this malpractice will face the law,” said Mwambo.

The district commissioner further said the support was provided by the Karonga District Council as a complementary intervention targeting vulnerable families that were not included in the government’s Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme.

He explained that the council noted that many households in the district are experiencing food shortages despite not being listed as beneficiaries under the ongoing government programme.

Group Village Head Simeon commended the council for the timely assistance, saying many households in the area are facing food insecurity.

The beneficiaries are from the group village heads of Gweleweta, Eliya, Katumbi Matukuta, Chisi, and Mwenewisi, all under Senior Chief Kilupula in Karonga District.
