The number of pickpocket cases on public transport, particularly on the tram network, has increased “in recent days”, the Grand-Ducal Police has warned.
“With the arrival of spring and improved weather conditions, the number of cases has increased very sharply,” the police force said on Wednesday.
Pickpockets take advantage of passengers who may be distracted while boarding or exiting the tram and may not notice they have been pickpocketed until later, police said.
Police advise passengers to be particularly careful when the tram, train or bus was crowded, to keep valuables such as wallets and phones out of sight, and to keep handbags and backpacks closed.
The force advised all victims to file a report and all passengers to report suspected pickpockets by phoning the 113 emergency number.
The police announcement did not provide data on the increase in pickpocket reports and at the time of publication the police had not replied to a Luxembourg Times request for the figures.
Annual crime statistics for 2025 have not yet been published. The figure for “other thefts” – which includes pickpocketing – was relatively stable in 2024.
Around 125,000 people take the tram daily, according to Luxtram. The tram operator started posting private security guards on its network under a pilot project that started last August. At the time of publication, Luxtram had not replied to a request for an update on the use of security guards.
