Luxembourg motorway service station to shut all weekend due to roadworks

Europe’s biggest service station will be closed in both directions at the weekend as the result of roadworks on the A3 motorway to the south of Luxembourg City.

The Berchem service station – one of the busiest in Europe – will close from 18:30 on Friday until 04:00 on Monday as a result of the roadworks.

The weekend closures, which the roads and bridges administration says are timed to avoid disruption, will begin at 20:00 on Friday and end at 04:00 on Monday.

The affected stretch just to the south of Luxembourg City is between the Gasperich and Bettembourg interchanges and a complex set of diversions will be put in place.

The A3 motorway will close for the entire period in the direction of Luxembourg City between the Bettembourg and Gasperich exits, as will the Croix de Bettembourg slip roads from the A13 motorway and towards the A3 motorway towards Luxembourg. The access ramp to the Livange interchange from the N31 towards Luxembourg is also impacted.

An hour-and-a-half later, at 21:30, the A3 motorway southbound away from Luxembourg will then also close between the Gluck roundabout and Bettembourg.

Drivers heading towards Luxembourg will be diverted via the A13 towards Esch-Alzette, onto the A4 and then the A6 into Gasperich and Luxembourg.

Drivers heading south away from Luxembourg will take the A6 in the direction of Belgium, then the A4 towards Esch and the A13 towards Schengen, rejoining the A3 just south of Bettembourg.

As workers prepare for the closure, disruption is expected to begin during Friday afternoon, even though the road will remain open. Full details of the closures can be found on the Cita website.
