Luxair and Lufthansa suspend flights amid Gulf airspace shutdown

Luxembourg’s flag carrier has said fewer passengers are stuck in the UAE than previously thought as US and Israel attacks on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes have shut down airspace across the Gulf region.

Luxair updated the number of passengers who are stranded in Dubai on Monday, telling the Luxembourg Times that “approximately 388 Luxair passengers are currently at destination in Dubai”. On Sunday, it had estimated that flight disruptions had left around 500 passengers stranded.

Luxair confirmed that it has suspended flights between Luxembourg’s Findel airport and Dubai until at least 8 March and that its outbound flight from Findel to Dubai on 4 March remained cancelled.

“Hotel accommodation has been secured for all package customers and for flight-only customers requiring support,” a spokesperson said. “For customers with upcoming bookings to Dubai, flexible rebooking and cancellation options have been made available to provide maximum flexibility.”

Luxair had said on Sunday that it would operate a rescue flight if it received authorisation from the government, but it did not comment on the possibility on Monday.

Lufthansa

Lufthansa has 32 flights per week between Luxembourg and its Frankfurt hub and 18 flights per week between Luxembourg and Munich.

A Lufthansa spokesperson said on Monday that it had suspended flights to Amman, Beirut, Erbil, Tehran and Tel Aviv until 7 March. Its planes will not use airspace over “Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Qatar and Iran,” he said.

“Affected passengers can rebook to a later travel date free of charge or, alternatively, receive a full refund of the ticket price,” the Lufthansa spokesperson said.

Lufthansa declined to say how many passengers flying in or out of Luxembourg were affected by these flight disruptions.

The Luxembourg Times has asked KLM and Turkish Airlines how many of their passengers flying in and out of Findel airport have been affected.

Cargolux and freight airlines

Luxembourg freight carrier Cargolux has suspended its flights to the Middle East, although it has not commented on how airspace restrictions are affecting flights that normally transit the region.

At the time of publication, Atlas Air, Emirates SkyCargo and Qatar Airways Cargo had not returned Luxembourg Times requests about disruptions to freight flights.
