500 kilograms of cocaine from an air cargo shipment arriving from Brazil were seized by the Luxembourg public prosecutor’s office following a coordinated operation with Dutch law enforcement, the office said on Thursday.
The shipment was intended for the Netherlands, with Luxembourg serving as a transit point.
Customs and excise officials, alongside the Grand Ducal Police and Luxembourg judicial authorities, inspected the shipment, which was officially declared as an industrial object weighing around 3.3 tonnes.
Rise in drugs seized at Luxembourg Airport cargo centre last year
Irregularities in the cargo prompted in-depth checks in January, revealing the concealed drugs.
Following instructions from a Luxembourg investigating judge and a request from Dutch authorities, the shipment was carefully monitored as it reached its destination. Dutch police then stepped in when several people tried to access the cocaine, leading to multiple arrests on 29 January.
The investigation is now being led by Dutch authorities, and further details will not be disclosed at this stage, the Luxembourg prosecutors said.
