Tawergha decision reflects a contradiction in government positions

Member of the House of Representatives, Jaballah Al-Shibani, spoke about the details of his meeting with the Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, regarding the administrative status of the municipality of Tawergha.

Al-Shibani said in a post on his Facebook account: “The head of the ‘Sikka Road’ government proposed to me the idea of keeping Tawergha as a local council until the situation calms down and the country stabilizes, after which a municipal council would be elected. This was initially met with acceptance and reason from the Prime Minister, who was under pressure from a faction opposing the establishment of a municipality for Tawergha.”

The representative explained that he was surprised by the Prime Minister’s reversal of his position and his decision to merge Tawergha into the municipality of Misrata, which prompted them to resort to the judiciary and use all available resources to challenge this decision.

Al-Shibani added that during the discussion, he stressed to the Prime Minister that within Misrata itself, there are demands to establish three or more municipalities, and that they would support this if Misrata were a governorate and Tawergha a municipality, but they refuse to have Tawergha be a municipal branch.

He noted that the Prime Minister justified his refusal by emphasizing the need to preserve the unity of Misrata, yet he recently issued a decision to establish three municipalities in small areas of Zawiya, questioning whether this was an attempt to fragment the city and sow sedition and discord among its people, or if the intentions were sound.
