Libya’s National Council Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) launched yesterday a technical assistance project to strengthen the capacities of the food security sector in Libya.
The project is funded by the Islamic Development Bank and implemented in cooperation with the Islamic Organization for Food Security, as part of the follow-up to the implementation of the National Food Security Strategy approved by the Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister.
The project was launched during a comprehensive workshop held in Tripoli, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Finance and several other relevant government agencies, as well as experts and specialists from international organizations concerned with food security.
The project, which falls under a partnership agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Islamic Development Bank, aims to strengthen the capacities of national institutions in the field of food security through two main components:
– The first involves preparing a comprehensive analytical study of the food basket in Libya.
– The second focuses on developing a national model for rapid response to emergencies and crises in the food security sector, ensuring greater preparedness to address urgent challenges.
In his address at the workshop, the NESDB Chairman affirmed that this project is a pivotal step towards building a sustainable food security system in Libya. He noted that the anticipated outcomes will contribute to enhancing planning and coordination among national and international stakeholders and improving intervention mechanisms in exceptional circumstances.
For his part, the representative of the Islamic Development Bank explained that the project reflects the bank’s commitment to supporting member states in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in food security. He commended the existing cooperation with Libyan authorities.
The workshop featured extensive discussions on project implementation mechanisms and ways to strengthen coordination among local and international partners, in addition to reviewing successful experiences in member states of the Islamic Organization for Food Security.
The event concluded with an emphasis on continuing periodic coordination meetings among all stakeholders to develop the implementation methodology and ensure the achievement of the desired objectives, thereby contributing to supporting national efforts to enhance food security in Libya.
