Rome–Tripoli air link to resume as ITA Airways schedules September restart

Italy’s national carrier, ITA Airways, is planning to resume flights between Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport and Mitiga International Airport from September, according to aviation data published by CH-Aviation.

The Swiss-based aviation intelligence platform reported that the airline is scheduled to restart services on 3 September, operating two weekly flights using an Airbus A319 aircraft.

ITA Airways, which is affiliated with Lufthansa Group, had previously resumed flights to Libya in early 2025, becoming the first major European carrier to return to the country since 2014. However, the airline later suspended operations again in October last year.

Air links between Italy and Libya have faced prolonged disruption since 2014, amid security concerns and restrictions affecting Libya’s aviation sector.

Since that year, Libyan airlines have remained subject to a European Union flight ban, forcing many Libyan travellers to rely on foreign carriers and indirect transit routes to reach destinations across Europe and beyond. The restrictions have significantly affected travel options for Libyan passengers over the past decade.
