The Public Prosecution has ordered the pretrial detention of the former mayor of Souq Al-Khamis-Msheihil municipality, the former head of the tenders committee, and the municipality’s former financial controller. They are under investigation for alleged financial misconduct and mismanagement of public funds.
An inquiry into the municipality’s finances found that the former mayor authorized the disbursement of 3.5 million dinars to an executive body managed by his brother. The investigation also revealed that the mayor misused the municipality’s budget by releasing an additional 2 million dinars to entities contracted for work in Qasr Bin Ghashir and Al-Sayeh municipalities.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s office, the investigation determined that all the accused deliberately misused their public positions. They authorized the disbursement of 7.217 million dinars in violation of regulations, allegedly to benefit others with illicit gains.
As a result, the Public Prosecution has ordered their pretrial detention pending further investigation.
