Court of Assizes convicts former officials at the National Commercial Bank Shahat

Al-Bayda – The Criminal Court at the Al-Bayda Court of Appeal issued a verdict. It convicted a former assistant to the treasurer. This official worked at the National Commercial Bank branch in Shahat. A former head of the current accounts department at the same branch was also convicted. Their conviction was due to their involvement in embezzling public funds. They used forged bank checks for this purpose. The checks had altered financial values. They sought to achieve illicit gains.

The Public Prosecution filed a lawsuit against the defendants. This followed the completion of its investigations. The investigations proved they committed acts contrary to banking laws and regulations. These actions caused significant damage to state funds. During trial sessions, the court reviewed evidence and documents. It also examined reports from regulatory bodies. The court then issued its final verdict, convicting the defendants.

The court sentenced the first defendant to eight years in prison. He was also fined three thousand dinars. Additionally, he was ordered to pay financial compensation. This compensation amounted to 4.3 million dinars. It was to cover the damages incurred by public funds. The second defendant was sentenced to four years in prison. He received a fine of 231,000 dinars. Both defendants were deprived of their civil rights. This deprivation lasts for the entire duration of their sentence. It continues for one year after their release.
