A National Step to Strengthen the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Political Participation

Tripoli – A workshop on developing a charter for persons with disabilities and political participation is a pivotal step. This was stated by Laila Al-Awjali, Director of the Department for the Elderly at the Ministry of Social Affairs. The workshop was held at the UN center in Tripoli. It aims to build a national framework that guarantees the rights of this group. It also supports their active presence in the political process.

Al-Awjali explained that the workshop focused on drafting the charter. General objectives and participant selection criteria were also explained. This ensures comprehensive representation and fair participation for all groups. She noted that sessions included a detailed presentation of four structured dialogue tracks. These are governance and elections, security, and the economy. The fourth track is national reconciliation and human rights.

The role of women with disabilities in the political process was a major topic of discussion. Al-Awjali affirmed that strengthening women’s participation is a key step in building a more inclusive society.

She added that participants engaged in specialized working groups. They discussed the visions and challenges for each track. Their findings were then presented in a general session to reach practical recommendations. These steps will enhance the inclusion of persons with disabilities in public life.

Al-Awjali concluded that these efforts reflect the country’s commitment. This includes developing a national framework for the rights of persons with disabilities. It also ensures their effective participation in building the nation’s future.
