The Tripoli based Libyan government reported last Thursday (5 February) that a warehouse in the Injila area, south of Tripoli, was raided and approximately 84,000 boxes of illegally stored cooking were seized.
The action was executed by the Committee, appointed by Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, headed by the Director of the Law Enforcement Department, Major General Abdul Hakim Al-Khitouni. The Committee is tasked with monitoring food commodities in the market.
The stored quantity is suspected of being part of monopolistic and price-fixing activity by the trader. The government is on a drive to keep prices low in view of the continuing rise of the exchange rate of the US dollar and the resultant rise in commodity prices.
The entire seized quantity was impounded, and the necessary legal measures were taken regarding the incident. The case was referred to the competent authorities for further investigation.
The committee affirmed that it will directly supervise the distribution of the oil to major markets and shops, and work to ensure its availability in the market according to established mechanisms.
