MONROVIA — The Ministry of Public Works (MPW), headed by Minister Roland Lafayette Giddings, has announced that a major consignment of road construction and maintenance equipment is currently being prepared for shipment to Liberia, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s public works and infrastructure capacity.
The announcement was made on Friday, January 9, as the Ministry confirmed that the Deputy Minister for Technical Services, Prince D. Tambah, is presently in the People’s Republic of China overseeing the final stages of the process. He is accompanied by the Director of the Ministry’s Mobile Division to supervise the loading and shipment arrangements.
According to the Ministry, loading of the cargo vessel is already underway and is expected to be completed ahead of the vessel’s scheduled departure on Thursday, January 15. Once the ship sets sail, it is projected to take approximately 45 to 50 days to arrive at the Free Port of Monrovia.
The first shipment will include a substantial fleet of heavy-duty and support equipment intended to enhance road construction and maintenance nationwide. The Ministry disclosed that the initial consignment comprises 114 pieces of heavy equipment, along with 20 utility pickup trucks.
The equipment list includes 19 bulldozers, 19 excavators, and 19 low-bed trailers, as well as 19 fuel tankers and 19 water tankers. The shipment also features 19 service trucks and 20 utility pickup vehicles to support operational and logistical needs in the field.
Upon arrival at the Free Port of Monrovia, the Ministry said the equipment will be offloaded and processed through the General Services Agency (GSA) for coding and registration. These administrative procedures are expected to be completed promptly to avoid delays.
Following registration, the Ministry confirmed that the equipment will be immediately deployed to the counties. The deployment is intended to support ongoing road rehabilitation works and planned public infrastructure projects across Liberia.
MPW noted that the distribution of the equipment to various counties is aimed at improving road connectivity, enhancing routine maintenance capacity, and ensuring quicker response to infrastructure needs, particularly during the rainy season.
Meanwhile, preparations are already in progress for a second shipment that will carry the remaining equipment. The Ministry said this final batch is expected to depart toward the end of January, further strengthening the Ministry’s operational capacity.
The Ministry of Public Works emphasized that the acquisition and phased deployment of the equipment demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving national infrastructure, expanding access to reliable road networks, and supporting economic activity across the country.
Officials at the Ministry reiterated that the current shipment of yellow machines represents one of the most significant recent efforts to equip the public works sector, with expectations that the added capacity will translate into visible improvements in road construction and maintenance nationwide.
