MONROVIA-The Ministry of Internal Affairs has transitioned into the Ministry of Local Government. The  move  represents a major step forward in the country’s decentralization and local governance reform agenda.

The transition was confirmed on Tuesday by Local Government Minister Francis Nyumalin, who stated that the change is based on the Local Government Act enacted by the National Legislature and approved by the President in 2018.

Minister Nyumalin explained that the law establishes the legal and institutional framework for decentralization, providing for the transfer and restructuring of certain governmental powers and responsibilities to local authorities.

“The transformation of the ministry is intended to strengthen local governance, improve public service delivery, and bring government closer to the people”, minister Nyumalin said.

According to the minister, existing officials and staff of the former Ministry of Internal Affairs will continue to serve in their current roles until the President formally restructures the ministry in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act.

The transition to the Ministry of Local Government is expected to enhance coordination between the central government and local administrations, while laying the foundation for more effective, transparent, and accountable governance at the community level.
