The Second World Summit for Social Development officially concluded on 6 November 2025 in Doha, State of Qatar, with global leaders emphasizing the urgent need to invest in people and peace. Delegates reaffirmed that social justice and peace are inseparable, calling for stronger social safety nets, poverty eradication, and human-rights-based policymaking.
The Summit marks thirty years since the first Social Summit, held in Copenhagen in 1995. It provided a platform for countries to review progress, share best practices, and strengthen strategies for social development worldwide.
His Majesty King Letsie III and the Lesotho delegation participated actively, leaving with a firm commitment to advance national social development priorities. Key areas of focus include finalizing Lesotho’s comprehensive social protection bill and enhancing cooperation with international partners, such as the International Labour Organization, on safe labor migration and portability of social security benefits.
On the sidelines of the Summit, Lesotho’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Hon. Tseliso Mokhosi, completed technical preparations for the signing of a Bilateral Labour Agreement with the State of Qatar before the end of 2025. The agreement is expected to strengthen protections for Lesotho workers abroad and promote fair labor practices.
Prior to the Summit’s closure, the Minister of Gender, Youth and Social Development, Hon. Pitso Lesaoana, attended an event focused on empowering social development through higher education. The session highlighted scalable leadership solutions under the LEAP-FAST initiative, aimed at building capacity for future social development leaders.
The Summit concluded with a renewed global commitment to people-centered policies, resilient social protection systems, and the integration of peace and justice into all social development efforts. Lesotho’s active participation reflects its determination to align national policies with international social development goals.
