The National University of Lesotho and Perm State Humanitarian Pedagogical University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on research, teaching and Russian-language study.

The National University of Lesotho (NUL) has signed a research and teaching agreement with a Russian university. The NUL Russia partnership, signed on 18 September 2026 with Perm State Humanitarian Pedagogical University (PSHPU), sets out cooperation in education, science and culture.
Professor Mosito signed for NUL and Professor Konstantin Egorov, Rector of PSHPU, signed for the Russian side.
What the NUL Russia partnership covers
The agreement is a framework for joint research, knowledge exchange, academic engagement and cultural programmes. It opens work for scholars, educators and students in both countries. The Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and the “My History” Foundation for the Support of Humanities have backed the initiative.
Russian language and an AI course
Two practical projects sit at the centre of the plan. The first is the expansion of Russian-language instruction in Lesotho, giving Basotho students and educators another route to engage with Russian scholarship and culture. The second is an online “AI in Education” course for Lesotho faculty, aimed at helping lecturers respond to the way artificial intelligence is changing teaching and learning. Academic events for teachers and students are also planned.
Despite the geographical distance between our nations, we are united by a shared understanding of the vital importance of education, and the role universities play in shaping society.
Professor Egorov said the agreement would open a professional dialogue and provide a foundation for future joint projects.
Diplomacy through universities
University links often come before governments negotiate treaties or businesses sign commercial deals. A lecturer working with a colleague thousands of kilometres away, a student learning another language, or two researchers tackling the same problem can do the quiet work of connecting countries.
For NUL, the NUL Russia partnership is a chance to widen its academic reach. For PSHPU, it is a first institutional link in Southern Africa. For Lesotho and Russia, it is another connection between two countries separated by geography but sharing an interest in education and research.
