Principal Chief of Ha Mamathe, Sempe Khabasheane Masupha, has raised serious concerns about the growing use of Hubbly-Bubbly, also known as hookah or shisha, particularly among young people. He warned that the practice poses significant health risks and called on the Government of Lesotho to take decisive action by banning its sale and distribution in the country.
Speaking during a recent community gathering, Chief Masupha highlighted that the use of Hubbly-Bubbly has become increasingly popular among youth, often viewed as a harmless social activity. However, he cautioned that this perception is dangerously misleading, as research shows that smoking shisha exposes users to high levels of harmful chemicals and toxins.
According to health experts, one hour of smoking Hubbly-Bubbly can expose a person to more smoke and toxic substances than several cigarettes combined. These include carbon monoxide, tar, heavy metals, and cancer-causing chemicals that can damage the lungs, heart, and immune system.
Chief Masupha stressed that the rising popularity of Hubbly-Bubbly among young people threatens public health and undermines efforts to promote a smoke-free generation. He said the government must urgently regulate or prohibit its sale, especially in entertainment venues and public spaces frequented by youth.
He also appealed to parents, schools, and community leaders to take a proactive role in educating children about the dangers of tobacco and related products. “We cannot sit back while our young people risk their health for a trend that brings no value to their lives,” he said.
The Chief’s remarks come amid growing global concern about the increasing use of hookah among young people. The World Health Organization (WHO) has repeatedly warned that shisha smoking carries similar or even greater health risks compared to cigarette smoking.
Chief Masupha urged health authorities and policymakers in Lesotho to strengthen awareness campaigns, enforce existing tobacco control laws, and close any regulatory gaps that allow the import and sale of Hubbly-Bubbly products.
He emphasized that protecting the health of young Basotho must remain a national priority and that swift government intervention could prevent a potential public health crisis linked to tobacco use.
His call adds momentum to ongoing discussions about public health protection and youth empowerment, reinforcing the importance of leadership in addressing lifestyle risks that threaten future generations.
