Parliamentarians Engage in Workshop on Legislation and Sustainable Development Goals in Lesotho

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, in collaboration with the Parliament of Lesotho and the Southern Africa Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADCPF), is hosting a two-day workshop for Parliamentarians at the National Assembly. The workshop, which began on February 4, 2026, focuses on scrutinising legislation through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By integrating the SDGs into legislative processes, lawmakers aim to ensure that national laws effectively contribute to social, economic, and environmental development. The initiative reflects growing recognition of the critical role Parliament plays in advancing sustainable development and promoting inclusive policies.

Key topics addressed during the workshop include Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Climate Change. Parliamentarians are engaging with experts and practitioners to better understand how current and proposed laws impact these priority areas. The sessions provide practical tools for reviewing legislation to align with SDG targets, ensuring policies are evidence-based, equitable, and responsive to citizen needs. Discussions also highlight the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, promoting gender equality, and enhancing environmental resilience.

The workshop offers an interactive platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building among lawmakers. Participants are exploring strategies to strengthen oversight, improve legislative drafting, and enhance parliamentary debates with a focus on sustainable outcomes. By examining both local and regional case studies, the training provides insights into best practices and challenges faced in implementing SDG-aligned policies. Parliamentarians are encouraged to identify gaps in existing legislation and propose amendments that support national development priorities.

Collaboration between the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliament of Lesotho, and SADCPF underscores the importance of regional cooperation in achieving the SDGs. The workshop not only strengthens individual Parliamentarians’ understanding of sustainable development but also promotes collective action across Southern Africa. This approach ensures that legislative frameworks are harmonised with global goals while addressing national realities.

By the conclusion of the two-day workshop, Parliamentarians are expected to have enhanced their capacity to scrutinise legislation effectively, particularly in areas of sexual and reproductive health and climate change. The training reinforces the principle that informed lawmaking is essential for driving progress toward the SDGs. Through initiatives like this, Lesotho demonstrates its commitment to creating laws that foster sustainable development, protect citizens’ rights, and respond to the pressing challenges of today and the future.
