Minister T’seliso Mokhosi Leads Lesotho Delegation at Bilateral Meeting with Philippines in Doha

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Hon. T’seliso Mokhosi, led the Lesotho delegation to a high-level bilateral meeting with representatives of the Government of the Philippines in Doha. The engagement formed part of Lesotho’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international labour relations and promote fair, safe, and mutually beneficial employment opportunities for Basotho workers abroad.

The meeting provided a platform for both governments to discuss key areas of cooperation, including labour migration, skills exchange, and the protection of migrant workers’ rights. Minister Mokhosi emphasized Lesotho’s commitment to improving labour mobility frameworks while ensuring that citizens working abroad are treated with dignity and fairness. He noted that partnerships with countries like the Philippines, which has extensive experience in managing overseas employment, present valuable learning opportunities for Lesotho’s labour sector.

During the talks, both sides highlighted the importance of establishing clear mechanisms for worker recruitment, training, and welfare monitoring. Minister Mokhosi underscored that effective regulation of labour migration contributes to national development by creating safer work environments and reducing the exploitation of workers. The Philippine representatives welcomed Lesotho’s proactive approach and expressed readiness to collaborate on technical support, labour management systems, and policy development.

The discussions also covered potential cooperation in vocational training and skills development. Lesotho’s delegation expressed interest in adopting best practices from the Philippines, particularly in upskilling workers to meet international labour standards. Both delegations agreed to explore the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize their partnership and enhance future collaboration in the employment sector.

Minister Mokhosi reaffirmed that Lesotho’s participation in such international dialogues aligns with its broader strategy to expand employment opportunities and promote decent work. He stated that building partnerships with countries that prioritize worker welfare strengthens Lesotho’s ability to protect its citizens while attracting investment in the labour sector.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen cooperation between Lesotho and the Philippines, focusing on labour rights, skill development, and migration management. This engagement marks another step forward in Lesotho’s pursuit of sustainable labour partnerships and international collaboration for economic growth.
