The District Football Association of Maseru President, Lijane Nthunya, has been elected as the new President of the Lesotho Football Association (LeFA). The election took place during the 20th LeFA Congress held at Bambatha Ts’ita Sports Arena on Saturday, October 25.
Nthunya secured victory with 27 votes against outgoing President Advocate Salemane Phafane, who received 24 votes. The closely contested election marked a significant moment for Lesotho football, signaling a new leadership direction after years under Phafane’s administration.
The congress was observed by officials from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), alongside representatives from the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC) and the Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC). Their presence ensured transparency and alignment with international football governance standards.
Nthunya’s election is viewed as a turning point for LeFA, as he takes office with a mandate to strengthen local football structures, improve player development, and expand opportunities for clubs and youth academies. His leadership at the Maseru District Football Association earned him a reputation for promoting grassroots football and organizational efficiency.
In his acceptance speech, Nthunya expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence, pledging to work toward unity and progress within the football fraternity. He emphasized the importance of accountability, improved infrastructure, and stronger partnerships with both regional and international football bodies.
Observers noted that the peaceful and transparent election process reflects growing maturity within Lesotho’s football administration. With new leadership in place, expectations are high that the association will focus on sustainable development, enhanced league management, and better support for national teams.
Nthunya now faces the task of steering Lesotho football toward greater competitiveness, both locally and on the continental stage, while ensuring that transparency and inclusivity remain at the heart of his administration.
