Lesotho Strengthens Gender Equality Collaboration with UN Women

On 3 November 2025, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Honourable Matjato Moteane, received a courtesy call from Ms. Anna Mutavati, the United Nations Women Regional Director for East and Southern Africa. Ms. Mutavati is on an official visit to Lesotho from 2–5 November 2025 to engage with government officials and stakeholders on advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.

During the meeting, discussions focused on UN Women’s new Strategic Note for 2026–2029, which emphasizes promoting women’s leadership, inclusive development, and gender-responsive policies at national and global levels. The dialogue highlighted opportunities for Lesotho to align its development strategies with international frameworks for gender equality and sustainable development.

UN Women continues to partner with Lesotho through programmes that enhance women’s political participation, economic empowerment, and peacebuilding initiatives. The organisation also supports measures to address gender-based violence and strengthen legal and institutional frameworks that protect women’s rights and promote equality.

The engagement reinforces Lesotho’s commitment to sustainable, gender-responsive development and reflects the strong collaboration between the government and UN Women. By leveraging this partnership, Lesotho aims to ensure that women’s voices and leadership remain central to national development priorities. The visit underscores the importance of sustained collaboration with international partners to advance gender equality, strengthen women’s rights, and create inclusive opportunities for all citizens in Lesotho.
