The Ministry of Law and Justice in Lesotho, through the Office of the Registrar General, hosted the Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Conference in Maseru on Monday. The aim was to examine how intellectual property systems can adapt to rapid technological change. It also created a platform for dialogue on improving efficiency, transparency, and cooperation among African IP institutions. The conference was officially opened by the Minister of Law and Justice, Mr Richard Ramoeletsi Richard Ramoeletsi, who highlighted the importance of the event for both national and continental development. He noted that the gathering comes at a symbolic time as Lesotho marks 60 years of independence while the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization African Regional Intellectual Property Organization celebrates its Golden Jubilee. He described intellectual property as a key driver of innovation, investment, and economic growth in modern economies. He also stressed that African countries must modernise their systems to keep pace with global technological change. According to him, digital transformation offers a practical pathway to improve service delivery within IP offices. This includes better accessibility for innovators, creators, and businesses seeking protection for their ideas.
Discussions at the conference focused heavily on the role of artificial intelligence and digital tools in reshaping intellectual property administration. Participants examined how online filing systems can reduce administrative delays and improve access to services across borders. AI assisted search tools were highlighted as a major development that can improve the accuracy and speed of patent and trademark examinations. Experts also discussed the importance of strengthening governance frameworks to ensure that digital systems remain secure and transparent. Regional cooperation was identified as a critical factor in building consistent standards across African IP offices. The conference encouraged member states to share technical expertise and invest in digital infrastructure that supports long term efficiency. It also emphasized the need to balance innovation with strong legal safeguards to protect creators and rights holders.
The Maseru conference reinforced the growing recognition that intellectual property systems must evolve alongside technological progress. It positioned Lesotho as an active participant in shaping the future of IP governance in Africa. The discussions highlighted both opportunities and challenges in adopting artificial intelligence and digital platforms within public administration systems. By bringing together regional stakeholders, the event strengthened networks that support collaboration and knowledge exchange. It also underscored the importance of aligning national reforms with broader continental frameworks. The outcomes of the conference are expected to guide future policy development and digital transformation strategies in member states. The gathering marked a significant step toward more modern, efficient, and interconnected intellectual property systems across Africa.
