Lesotho Foreign Affairs Ministry Clarifies Credential Requirements Amid UAT Controversy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations has emphasized that only individuals officially representing the Kingdom of Lesotho in international agreements receive credentials from the ministry.

Minister Lejone Mpotjoane made the statement following controversy involving Dr. Mahali Phamotse, leader of United Africans Transformation (UAT), who sent 24 Basotho students to Synergy University in Russia. The university’s official website reportedly lists the agreement as signed with “Lesotho Minister of Education” Dr. Mahali Phamotse.

Minister Mpotjoane expressed surprise at Dr. Phamotse being referred to as Minister of Education, noting that she does not hold such a position. He stated that this raises concerns about whether the agreement was executed under false pretences.

The Minister clarified that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has never issued credentials to Dr. Phamotse to commit the Kingdom of Lesotho to any agreements with Synergy University. This statement reinforces the ministry’s role in authorizing and validating all international commitments on behalf of Lesotho.
