Certified Leadership Course Launch Boosts Sports and Healthy Living in Lesotho

The Lesotho Sport and Recreation Commission (LSRC) has officially launched the Certified Leadership Course (CLC) Community Project Implementation at Ha Motolo, Selesele Football Club Pitch in Berea, marking a major step in strengthening sports leadership and promoting healthy lifestyles through physical activity. The initiative aims to move the focus of sports beyond high-profile international events and embed the importance of daily physical activity within local communities. Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Mrs Mats’epo Khau emphasized that the real goal of sports development is to ensure every Mosotho maintains good health. She highlighted that regular exercise plays a critical role in reducing both communicable and non-communicable diseases and encouraged the public to recognize the value of staying active. Mrs Khau further advised simple activities like walking, stressing that maintaining health does not require participation in professional sports alone.

Deputy LSRC President, Mr Kamohelo Hlomisi, explained that the Certified Leadership Course was designed to empower communities by equipping participants with essential leadership and management skills in sports. He stated that the programme’s broader aim is to unite communities through sport while also creating opportunities for livelihood improvements. The project is set to be implemented across five districts, including Mafeteng, Berea, Botha-Bothe, Leribe, and Qacha’s Nek, with a focus on various community sport and fitness activities tailored to local needs. Mr Hlomisi emphasized that these initiatives are community-driven solutions, intended to encourage active participation from people of all ages. He noted that engaging in sports and physical activity not only supports healthy living but also encourages productive routines, such as walking long distances and maintaining proper nutrition, while reducing susceptibility to illness.

Mr Hlomisi also highlighted that active engagement in sports can address social challenges among youth, including teenage pregnancy and indiscipline, by providing structured and positive activities. He reaffirmed LSRC’s commitment to community development, stressing that sports have the power to unite people and foster a healthier nation. LSRC Public Relations Officer, Advocate Jobo Raswoko, added that a follow-up training session conducted in November in partnership with TAFISA aimed to reinforce health and sports promotion within local communities. Raswoko explained that community members were carefully selected to develop projects that would now be implemented following the official launch of the Certified Leadership Course, ensuring that the initiatives meet the specific needs of each community.

One of the programme’s trainees, Mr Tebello Matsoso from Leribe, shared that the CLC promotes health inclusively, benefiting everyone regardless of age, social status, or religion. He observed that while many people involved in sports often face financial challenges, initiatives like this allow them to contribute positively to community health. Matsoso also pointed out that regular physical exercise is a preventive measure against many illnesses, highlighting the long-term health benefits of active participation in sports. The programme, he emphasized, provides a framework for sustainable community health improvement by combining physical activity with leadership development.

The Certified Leadership Course Community Project is expected to have a lasting impact on Lesotho’s communities by encouraging greater participation in sports and promoting healthier lifestyles across the participating districts. By equipping individuals with leadership skills and fostering engagement in physical activity, the initiative addresses both health and social development simultaneously. With continued implementation, the project aims to create a culture of regular exercise, community collaboration, and positive youth engagement. LSRC’s initiative demonstrates a strategic approach to building stronger, healthier, and more united communities in Lesotho through the power of sports.
