An airBaltic flight from Tallinn was unable to land at Vilnius Airport on Thursday and was diverted to Riga.
Tadas Vasiliauskas, spokesman for Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports, LTOU), the operator of Lithuania’s airports, told the Delfi news portal that an aviation security specialist at Vilnius Airport had reported a suspicious flying object above the facility.
Oro Navigacija, the air navigation service provider, was informed, and a decision was made to temporarily suspend flights until the information could be verified.
“The operation also involved other services, but they did not detect any object, so Vilnius Airport resumed operations,” Vasiliauskas said.
Information about the suspicious object was received at around 9 p.m. By about 9:30 p.m., flights had resumed.
The airBaltic flight was scheduled to land in Vilnius at 9:45 p.m. Its landing time was later postponed to 11 p.m., but at that time the airport’s website still listed the plane as “expected to arrive.”
