After the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran, Tel Aviv’s diplomatic relations with Spain have further deteriorated, and the Spaniards have closed the ambassador’s position, writes Reuters.
Spain’s ambassador to Israel was recalled last September. Then, the diplomatic friction was caused by Spain’s decision to deny planes and ships carrying weapons to use Spanish ports and airports due to Israel’s military operation in Gaza. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the decision anti-Semitic.
On the 10th of March, Spain published an official statement that the ambassador’s position in Israel was being eliminated. The Spanish Foreign Ministry reported that from now on, its embassy in Tel Aviv will be headed by a responsible diplomat.
Spain’s decision marks a new escalation in diplomatic relations between the two countries,
which have been complicated since October 2023, when Israel began its military operation in Gaza. The Israeli embassy in Spain will also be headed by a charge d’affaires from May 2025. Tel Aviv recalled its ambassador when Spain announced its decision to recognize Palestinian statehood.
Saar accused Spain in early March of defending tyrants when it condemned the war on Iran.
