Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced that an immediate threat at the Ukraine-Poland border was averted and warned that incidents linked to Russia are to be expected in the near future, reports Politico.
Tusk’s remarks came just a day after a Russian drone struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, killing two people and injuring several others. Following a meeting of Visegrád Group leaders in Bratislava on the 10th of September, Tusk stated that an immediate threat at a border crossing had been thwarted the previous night thanks to cooperation between Polish services and their Ukrainian counterparts. Tusk did not provide further details regarding the nature of the threat or specify which of the 18 border crossings was affected.
The Prime Minister added that this event was merely the beginning of what lies ahead, noting that he had received fairly precise information from the US Central Intelligence Agency regarding potential incidents in the coming months. Tusk stated that there is a need to be prepared for various scenarios, and that both Poland and Europe as a whole must be ready for various contingencies—not only on the Russia-Ukraine front but across the entire eastern flank of the European Union. Following a drone attack on a Ukraine-Moldova border crossing in the Odesa region,
Moldovan President Maia Sandu called for expanded European air defense support for Ukraine.
Russia also attacked the Ukraine-Moldova border in August.
Tusk noted that Russia has already resorted to provocative attacks on border crossings—such as those in Moldova—and that similar actions could be expected along Ukraine’s borders with other countries as well.
In August, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Tusk warned that escalation by Russia was intensifying and called for the provision of air defense to Ukraine, noting its importance for Polish security. The Polish Prime Minister stated that the coming six months could be decisive and that provocations against NATO countries could not be ruled out.
