Major data center developments in Finland could hike electricity prices in Estonia

Google’s €13 billion investment in Finnish data centres could raise electricity prices in Estonia by around half a cent per kilowatt-hour if neither country adds sufficient generation capacity, ERR reports.

The energy-intensive facilities will purchase approximately half of the electricity produced by Finland’s Loviisa nuclear power plant over the next 22 years, reducing the surplus previously available for export.

Enefit management board member Tiit Hõbejõgi said that if Finnish prices rise, “they will also rise for us during periods when we import electricity from Finland.”

However, Ignitis Eesti CEO Timo Tatar expects the average price to remain broadly stable, although “market volatility may increase.”

He added that greater demand should encourage construction of new power plants, potentially creating more periods of very low prices as additional wind-generation capacity enters the market.
