Latvians in Middle East encouraged to add names to Consular Register / Article

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 1st invited citizens who are in parts of the Middle East affected by the armed conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States to register their names.

“We invite Latvian nationals who are currently in the Middle East region for a short period of time and who need information about what to do in the current situation to register in the Consular Register using the  Latvija.gov.lv portal  or  the mobile application “Travel Safely”. It is also possible to register a trip after entering a foreign country, however, it should be noted that the Consular Register is intended for Latvian nationals who are abroad for a short period of time – up to 3 months,” said the Ministry on Sunday.

In the Consular Register, 323 nationals have currently registered a short-term trip to the United Arab Emirates, Israel – 18, Bahrain – 4, Jordan – 5, Qatar – 13, and Saudi Arabia – 4.

“Given the significant number of requests, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with the information received in the Consular Register. If a Latvian citizen does not have the technical ability to register themselves, we invite you to ask relatives to register in the traveller’s place. In exceptional cases, we invite you to send the traveller’s data to the 24-hour duty officer of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for inclusion in the Consular Register,” said the Ministry.

The Ministry is sending informational emails to persons who have registered a trip to the Middle East region in the Consular Register with recommendations on how to act in the current situation, as well as alternative options for leaving the country, if any exist, though as yet no special evacuation flights have been arranged. The airspace over the Middle Eastern countries, with the exception of Oman and Saudi Arabia, is closed.

“As the security situation in the region is unstable, we strongly urge citizens to follow the announcements of local official media regarding changes in the security situation, as well as to follow the instructions of local authorities,” advised the Ministry.

“Currently, it is possible to travel by land from Israel to Egypt via the Taba border crossing. At the same time, we urge travelers to assess the potential risks associated with traveling by land.

“The government of the United Arab Emirates urges tourists and residents to remain calm and stay safe indoors. The security situation in the country is under control. Traveling by land via Oman is not recommended as it can be long and difficult. It is the responsibility of each traveler to choose this route,” said the Ministry.

Persons currently in the Middle East region are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the travel warnings published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to follow the Facebook/Meta account of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: www.facebook.com/celodrosi.

In an emergency situation, contact the 24-hour duty officer of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by phone: +371 26337711 or e-mail: [email protected].
