Latvian police raid yields cigarettes and drugs / Article

At the end of last year, the Laytvian State Police received information about the sale of tobacco products in the Olaine region which led to raids by Riga Regional Administration Pieriga South Precinct of the State Police which on March 3rd of this year detained a resident of Olaine born in 1987 in connection with these offences, the police said in a release.

During a search of the suspect’s residence and car, 14,849 units of tobacco products without Latvian excise stamps and 6.75 litres of illegal alcohol were found and seized. 4.25 liters of methadone, various psychotropic tablets and a small amount of marijuana were also seized from the man.

He was also found with 765 euros in cash. If the suspicions that this money was obtained through criminal means are confirmed, a decision will be made to transfer it to the state budget.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Section 221, Part One of the Criminal Law – illegal storage, transfer or sale of alcoholic beverages or tobacco products, if committed in large quantities. The law provides for deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years.

Expert examinations have been ordered for the seized narcotics and psychotropic substances, their origin is being clarified, and a decision will be made to initiate criminal proceedings for the illegal circulation of narcotics and psychotropic substances.

The male suspect was born in 1987 and had previously been arrested by the police for driving under the influence of alcohol.
