A good display by Latvia on September 1st eased fears that they might not make it out of the group stages of the EuroBasket 2025 tournament, with victory over Portugal in Rīga by a score of 78:62.
Latvia started particularly well and maintained a reassuring buffer on the scoreboard throughout the match, helped in part by star player Kristaps Porziņģis finally finding his range from distance. He contributed 21 points.
A second win in four matches does not yet completely ensure Latvia will qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament, but it makes it a lot more likely, and if Serbia beats the bottom-placed Czech Republic in Monday’s final game, Latvia are through to the last 16.
In the event that the Czechs cause an upset and beat Serbia, Latvia still has one match to go against the Czech Republic on September 3rd.
Regardless of the Serbia v Czech Republic result, the hosts will enter the arena on Wednesday in confident mood.
The group stage of the European Championship final tournament features 24 teams divided into four groups, playing a round-robin tournament in Rīga, Tampere, Katowice and Limassol. The top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages, which will be held in Rīga. The champions will be decided on September 14.
