Surge in pediatric injuries: Bishkek emergency care faces critical strain
AKIPRESS.COM – The emergency trauma center at Bishkeks Third Children’s Hospital is currently treating up to 450 children daily, a significant increase from previous years.
Department head Aziretbek Valiev told AKIpress that injuries have climbed from 87,000 in 2022 to over 97,000 in 2025, driven by urban growth and seasonal activity.
Common hazards include unmonitored mall play zones, trampolines leading to complex fractures, and falls from multi-story windows. Playground swings alone account for 10 to 15 head and facial injuries every day, often occurring while parents are distracted by their phones.
Valiev highlighted the severe rise in high-speed scooter and motorbike accidents, noting several fatalities and permanent disabilities among teenagers in the past year.
The spring season has brought a peak in dog bites and injuries from outdoor excursions.
Despite the heavy workload, the facility operates with only two doctors per shift—well below the required five—leading to long wait times and occasional aggression from parents.
With a new surgical wing set to open later this year, the hospital aims to improve its diagnostic capabilities, though Valiev stresses that parental supervision remains the only effective way to prevent these tragedies.
