Smart grid push; MEW begins implementation of major fiber optic projects

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has launched the implementation of two major fiber optic infrastructure contracts as part of its broader strategy to modernize networks and accelerate digital transformation across the sector.

The announcement was made by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Engineer Fatima Hayat, who explained that the projects aim to strengthen the communications backbone supporting operational systems by linking existing main substations through advanced fiber optic networks.

She stated that the work includes excavation and the installation of underground fiber optic cables to connect main substations and power stations with monitoring and control centers, following designated underground routes.

The scope also covers replacing the current ground wire on overhead transmission lines with underground fiber optic cables, a move expected to significantly enhance remote operation, system control, and overall network management efficiency, reports Al-Rai daily.

Engineer Hayat emphasized that these upgrades will play a key role in improving performance reliability, enabling faster data transmission, and supporting smarter management of the electrical system in line with international best practices.

In line with the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and open communication, she noted that a weekly schedule will be published outlining the locations of the two projects. This will allow citizens, residents, and relevant authorities to review work plans in advance and coordinate accordingly.

The Ministry expressed its appreciation to the public and all those concerned for their cooperation and understanding during the implementation period. It also reassured that every effort will be made to minimize disruption, protect existing infrastructure at work sites, and restore any affected areas to their original condition once work is completed.

The Ministry further affirmed that the projects will be executed in accordance with the highest standards of quality and safety, and within the approved timeline, reflecting its commitment to delivering sustainable and future-ready infrastructure for Kuwait.
