Appeal acquits former MP Al-Muwaizri in biometric fingerprinting case

The Court of Appeal has upheld the verdict of the Criminal Court and acquitted former MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizri in the biometric fingerprint case.

The case was filed against him by the Ministry of Interior over statements he made opposing the system through a series of tweets he posted on his X) account, criticizing the biometric procedure and publicly refusing to comply with it upon his return to Kuwait.

His stand had sparked legal action by the Ministry, citing potential incitement and public disruption.

However, the Criminal Court had earlier ruled in favor of Al-Muwaizri, acquitting him of all charges. The appellate court has now confirmed that ruling, marking a significant moment for public discourse rights and digital expression in Kuwait.

The verdict is seen as a reaffirmation of constitutional protections on freedom of speech, particularly for political figures and public commentators voicing concerns over government policies.
