Matuga Girls High School History, Fees, KCSE Performance And Contacts

Matuga Girls High School is a national girls’ secondary school located in Kwale County, established in 1967.

The present school site was first an Agricultural Training Centre and later a detention camp, which was subsequently converted into an Intermediate school. This school was then converted into a Harambee secondary school for girls in 1967.

In 1970, the first Form Four students sat for their ‘O’ level examination, and in the same year, A level was introduced. In 1973, the school became a double stream. In 1988, it became a triple stream at the ‘0’ level and a double stream at the ‘A’ level.

The ‘A’ level stream at Matuga Girls was phased out in 1989 following the nationwide shift to Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system. Since then, student admissions have been determined by performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.

In 2023, KCPE was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework. Matuga Girls was elevated to a national school in 2013 and is four-streamed.

The school has consistently expanded in both size and academic performance, with a current enrolment of over 760 students.

In the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Matuga Girls reclaimed its former glory by achieving exceptional results in the national examinations.

The school produced a single grade A. Six candidates scored A-, 25 attained B+, 45 earned B (plain), 85 got B-, 68 achieved C+, 51 scored C, while 46 other students obtained grades below C.

The top grade was posted by Ndanu Hellen, an 18-year-old student from Mombasa County, who earned the school’s only A plain and emerged as the top girl in Kwale County. She was closely followed by Melyne Achieng’, one of the six students who achieved an A-.

In the 2024 KCSE exams, Matuga posted a mean score of 7.37, a slight decrease from 9.532 achieved in the 2023 KCSE.

School fees

Recognized as a Cluster Four (IV) national school, Matuga Girls is among a select group of institutions designated by the Ministry of Education for their exceptional infrastructure, academic performance, and human resource capacity. It is the only girls’ national school in Makueni County.

The Ministry of Education, through its 2020 guidelines, categorized national schools into four clusters, each with specified annual fee limits. Mbooni Girls falls under Cluster Two, with an official annual fee cap of approximately Ksh75,798 per student.

However, actual fees may slightly vary depending on additional levies approved by the school’s Board of Management (BoM).

These may cover costs such as school uniforms, co-curricular activities, motivational programs, and infrastructure development projects. All adjustments are made in line with government policy and MoE regulations.
