Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated during a weekly press conference: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has never sought, and does not seek, nuclear weapons.”

He added: “Regarding remaining a party to this treaty, and notwithstanding our clear position on the prohibition of all weapons of mass destruction (WMD), this is a matter under genuine discussion within public opinion and at the parliamentary level.”

Context of the War
The war on Iran broke out on February 28, 2026, following large-scale airstrikes by the United States and Israel targeting vital facilities, military installations, and command centers in Tehran and other cities. These strikes resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day, along with senior officials including the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, and prominent leaders of the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC).

In retaliation, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones toward Israel and regional countries, while closing the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a surge in global energy prices.

The conflict expanded to Lebanon on March 2, after Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel following the assassination of Ali Khamenei. Israel responded with extensive airstrikes and a ground incursion into southern Lebanon.
