How to Protect Children from Dehydration in Summer…

Dr. Anatoly Malyshev, from the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care at the Pirogov National Medical Surgical Center, stated that dehydration develops more rapidly in children than in adults.اضافة اعلان

He said: “Dehydration develops significantly faster in young children compared to adults. Therefore, parents should pay attention to signs such as decreased frequency of urination, dry lips and tongue, absence of tears when crying, unusual lethargy, refusal to drink fluids, a sunken fontanelle in infants, as well as drowsiness or, conversely, extreme irritability. If these symptoms appear, a doctor should be consulted immediately.”

The physician noted that physical activity requires special attention during hot weather, as intense exercise in high temperatures increases the risk of overheating and dehydration, particularly when performed under direct sunlight. He advised, whenever possible, postponing physical activities to the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are lower.

He also emphasized the importance of monitoring health status during exercise, explaining that dizziness, nausea, severe weakness, chills, loss of balance, or the cessation of sweating are warning signs that require stopping exercise immediately. He stressed the necessity of replenishing lost fluids in small, regular amounts during physical activity, not just after finishing it.

He explained that the primary measure to prevent body overheating and dehydration is maintaining the body’s fluid balance. He highlighted the importance of not ignoring thirst during hot weather, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and wearing light, appropriate clothing.

He added that children, the elderly, and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses are the groups most vulnerable to the effects of high temperatures and require special care during heatwaves.
