Yellow Thursday: Three Men, Three Suicides Reported

The police are probing three separate incidents of suspected suicide on Thursday.

In the first incident, a 47-year-old barber was found hanging from a ceiling in Conners district, St Catherine.

Reports are Paul “Julius” Elliot was found hanging from a balcony with a sheet wrapped around his neck. Elliot was found by residents around 8 on Thursday morning.

Around 10 on Thursday night, the St Andrew South police were summoned to a residence on Sixth Street in Greenwich Town. This as 23-year-old Kevon Hamilton was found hanging from a ceiling with a curtain around his neck.

In addition to the two suspected hangings, a businessman is also believed to have died from a self inflicted gunshot wound at a St Andrew apartment complex early Thursday morning.

According to a February 2, 2025 report in the Jamaica Observer, the number of suicide deaths have increased four consecutive years since 2021, climbing to 67 in 2024, the highest since 2001 when 75 people took their own lives. Over the 2021 to 2024 period, men accounted for 217 of suicide deaths, more than eight times more than women.

The Observer was citing statistics from the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

The color yellow is often associated with suicide prevention, specifically in the form of the yellow ribbon. Additionally, the International Association for Suicide Prevention, IASP, uses a yellow and orange ribbon emoji for World Suicide Prevention Day.
