JLP wants Mikael Phillips & Dr. Brown Burke sanctioned

Pressure is being brought to bear on the leadership of the Opposition People’s National Party, PNP, and at least two of their senior parliamentarians after an explosive sitting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

As we hear in this report from Colliecia Wright, the governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, is calling for the PNP’s Mikael Phillips and Dr. Angela Brown Burke to be sanctioned for what it describes as crude, unbecoming and violent conduct in the House.

Mikael Phillips is engulfed in controversy after he aggressively charged in the direction of West Kingston Member of Parliament, Desmond McKenzie, and uttered expletives shortly after proceedings at Gordon House adjourned on Tuesday.

In a statement, the JLP says McKenzie told Phillips not to disrespect House Speaker, Juliet Holness.

The JLP says when Phillips shouted at Mrs. Holness and called her wicked, McKenzie told him to do better and asked Phillips to consider whether he would wish for his mother to be spoken to in such a disrespectful fashion.

Phillips reportedly told McKenzie to perform a sexual act on his mother among expletives.

He has since apologised to the Jamaican people, saying his reaction was inappropriate and he regrets having allowed himself to respond in that manner.

But JLP Deputy General Secretary, Charles Sinclair, says Phillips’ so-called apology is not good enough.

Sinclair adds that a video of South West St. Andrew MP, Dr Angela Brown Burke, taunting and barging into Mrs. Holness with her shoulder is startling.

Meanwhile, Senate President Tom Tavares Finson says it is clear that the leadership of the Opposition PNP has authorised disgraceful behavior among their ranks and is seeking to bring the Parliament into disrepute.

Tavares-Finson says Dr. Brown Burke must face the strongest sanction possible under parliamentary rules.
