JFJ has questions about military cooperation between USA & JA

Executive Director at Jamaicans For Justice, JFJ, Mickel Jackson, is questioning the governance and accountability mechanisms surrounding the Status of Forces Agreement, SOFA, signed between Jamaica and the United States.

She was speaking on the JFJ-produced show Let’s Talk Justice aired on Nationwide 90FM on Friday.

The agreement was announced on Thursday in a joint media statement by the Jamaican and US governments.

It formalises the terms governing the presence of U.S. military personnel in Jamaica conducting mutually agreed activities. These include training exercises and joint operations.

The governments note that SOFA will deepen cooperation in their fight against criminal organisations and narco-terrorists.

Jamaica now joins more than 120 countries that have similar agreements with the US.

Jackson says clarity is needed on whether the joint operations under the agreement will have any impact on human rights.
