Women’s Coalition should wear “fringe” as a badge of honour

What does the word “fringe” mean, when it is applied to a group raising concerns about immigration? That was the adjective that Ellen Coyne in the Irish Times employed on Monday, in her profile of the Women’s Coalition on Immigration.

“Fringe” is a notably different word from, for example, “extreme”. The latter denotes a viewpoint that might advocate for radical, disruptive, and potentially dangerous solutions. For example, an extremist might, in some cases, feel that their views are worth killing over. Or an extreme libertarian might advocate abolishing all taxes and spending.
