Minister’s comments reveal Govt’s dodgy understanding of media
By now, much digital ink has been spilled about Minister Patrick O’Donovan’s comments on the media’s “lopsided” coverage of the fuel protests. By which he meant, of course, that protestors – people critical of the Government – received a greater share of the airtime than he thinks they should have done.
Minister O’Donovan said that he’d be asking the independent media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, to undertake a review of the coverage of the protests, to ensure that democracy is served with the guarantee of sufficient “balance”, as he sees it. A call he later backtracked on, it should be noted, following significant outcry and scrutiny.
