In early 2000, a proposal emerged from RTÉ that some championship games be played on Monday evenings.

They already had a Monday programme, which was confined to reflecting on weekend action, the majority of which took place on Sundays. A live Monday game would make better TV and the GAA stood to gain from a promotional viewpoint.
