Ireland looking at options as EU to review emissions trading

Ireland is expected to look at its options ahead of a review of the EU’s controversial Emissions Trading System or ETS in the coming months, the Department of Energy has confirmed to Gript. The review comes as a pan-European coalition of nations including Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic push to ‘gut’ the carbon trading system citing consumer concerns.

While Ireland is less exposed to the ETS thanks to a relative lack of heavy industry, Dublin’s EU Council Presidency is set to coincide with a significant review of the EU’s ETS, in the coming months placing Minister for Climate and Energy Darragh O’Brien and his department in an influential role in upcoming negotiations.
