European states shift regarding ECHR and asylum, deportation

The Irish government added its name to a pan-European declaration of 46 countries at the Council of Europe, asserting that their states have an “undeniable sovereign right” to control the entry and residence of foreign nationals in what is already being viewed as a landmark shift in how the ECHR is interpreted.

The declaration was adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, including the Irish Department of Justice, during its 135th session in Chişinău on Friday and is likely to influence future ECHR interpretation regarding mass migration.
