Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Barham Salih, and his accompanying delegation in New York to evaluate the status of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), alongside joint humanitarian relief programs.

The diplomatic discussions were held on the sidelines of Al-Zaidi’s active participation in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The talks centered on deepening institutional coordination between the Iraqi Federal Government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with a particular focus on mobilizing technical resources and international assistance to support vulnerable displaced populations.

Prime Minister Al-Zaidi underscored that Baghdad places human rights and humanitarian protection at the forefront of its national priorities, maintaining consistent cooperation with the UNHCR and relevant multilateral agencies to enhance living conditions, deliver targeted welfare services, and rebuild stability across liberated and crisis-impacted areas.

Al-Zaidi emphasized the necessity of tackling the root causes driving involuntary displacement and asylum seeking, calling for cohesive regional and international coordination frameworks to safeguard the fundamental rights of displaced groups in strict alignment with international conventions and statutory humanitarian laws.

In response, High Commissioner Salih confirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting Iraq through comprehensive relief and developmental operations, stressing that the UNHCR will continue working with Baghdad to fulfill all operational and financial benchmarks necessary to permanently resolve the internal displacement file.
