Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – US-based Morgan Hughes Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iraq’s General Company for Carbon Economics (GCCE) to develop projects aimed at capturing and utilizing associated gas currently flared at oil production sites across Iraq.
The agreement was signed in Baghdad by Morgan Hughes Energy Managing Director Gregory Bloom and GCCE, under the patronage of Iraq’s Minister of Environment, Sarwa Abdulwahid, and in the presence of US Chargé d’Affaires Steven Fagin.
The proposed partnership will focus on recovering low-pressure associated gas and using it to generate electricity for oil production facilities, reducing gas flaring and reliance on Iraq’s national electricity grid.
The initiative also aims to develop carbon credit projects using internationally recognized monitoring and verification standards, creating potential revenue opportunities through carbon markets while supporting Iraq’s emissions reduction targets.
Morgan Hughes Energy said it plans to bring American expertise and technology to the projects, supporting Iraq’s energy security and hydrocarbon development.
The company operates in the upstream and midstream oil and gas sectors, with interests across the Middle East, including offshore gas production, pipeline infrastructure, and gas storage facilities.
The MoU represents an initial step towards a broader strategic partnership between the two companies, with specific projects still subject to further development.
